If plans do not miscarry, Kungfu Reyes will be coaching in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for the first time ever.
According to a reliable DAILY TRIBUNE source, Reyes is expected to sign a contract as head coach of San Beda University, marking his debut in the country’s oldest collegiate league.
The source refused to provide further details but stressed that Reyes’ looming appointment as Lady Red Spikers mentor replacing Edgar Barroga is already a “done deal.”
A formal announcement will be made in the coming days.
“He has yet to formally sign a contract but it’s already a done deal,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the situation remains fluid.
Reyes has been with the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) during the course of his playing and collegiate careers.
He led the Growling Tigers to a handful of men’s volleyball titles in the past before finally becoming the head coach of the girls’ volleyball team that had future stars like Alyssa Valdez, Dindin Manabat, Jaja Santiago and Kim Fajardo.
In 2015, he was finally promoted as head coach of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) women’s squad, which he led to numerous Final Four appearances.
But after 10 years without a title, the school decided to take a different direction and appointed the 44-year-old Reyes as program director for girls’ and women’s volleyball. Reyes, however, will also handle the high school squad while Shaq Delos Santos was brought back to call the shots for the collegiate team.
Now, a fresh challenge arise as Reyes will be taking over a Lady Red Spikers squad that has been struggling to make a mark in the NCAA.
Actually, San Beda’s coach was Edgar Barroga. He, however, was replaced by Joshua Noda in an interim capacity before the end of first round of Season 100 last March.
The Lady Red Spikers had a forgettable season, finishing with only four wins in 18 matches together with Emilio Aguinaldo College and just one game ahead of Jose Rizal University.
