The Philippine Football Federation formally announced the departure of Freddy Gonzalez as director for national teams Tuesday evening.
In a statement, Gonzalez thanked the federation for his time as he focuses on personal endeavors.
The former national team striker was appointed in 2024 and was even serving as team manager for both the men's and women's football squads.
“It has been one of the biggest honors of my life to be a part of this team and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity. This was a very difficult decision to make and one that required much reflection and introspection,” Gonzalez said.
“Now is the time for me to focus on other pursuits and opportunities, both personal and professional.”
“I want to thank all of the players for their sacrifices and commitment to the team. They all have changed the culture of the National Team. In such a short time, they have made a difference in Philippine football, for the better. I am looking forward to seeing them become a force in Asia, and will be rooting for them from the sidelines. It was an absolute privilege!”
Gonzalez helped bring in players like Bjorn Kristensen and Gerrit Holtmann to the Philippines in hopes of bolstering the squad.
He was also responsible for bringing in coaches Tom Saintfiet of Belgium and Albert Capellas of Spain into the country.
In fact, the Philippines made it back to the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup semifinals for the first time since 2018 and even defeated powerhouse Thailand, 2-1, last year under Gonzalez's leadership.
His last match as team manager was a 2-2 draw against Tajikistan last week in the third round of the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers at the New Clark City Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.
