In about a week’s time, another Filipino fighter is going to attempt to win a world title on foreign land.
Christian Araneta, nicknamed “The Bomb,” meets Thanongsak Simsri of Thailand for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) light-flyweight throne.
While it appears that Araneta is fighting on neutral ground given that he is not battling a Japanese, Simsri is actually the home fighter.
His promoters are Japanese, making Araneta the visiting fighter in their scheduled 12-round showdown for the IBF 108-pound title at the Ota City Gymnasium on 19 June.
But the Filipino’s team is not plain and simple confident.
They are upbeat and are actually looking forward to a coronation night.
Araneta simply has a lot of power that Simsri won’t withstand the bombardment the Cebu-born is going to unleash, according to his team.
But Simsri has more experience than Araneta and this could play a pivotal role in this meeting.
In fact, Simsri has beaten two top Filipinos, including the hard-hitting Miel Fajardo, proof that he is no stranger to facing and getting past power-punchers like Araneta.
Araneta, 30, armed himself for Simsri’s skill set by doing three rounds of sparring with two-belt world flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji of Japan a few days ago.
While his main weapon is his power, Araneta’s training team believe that his heavy hands won’t matter if they don’t find the target.
To do this, lead trainer Julius Erving Junco is utilizing training techniques made popular by the master fighter Vasyl Lomachenko to improve on timing and eye-to-hand coordination.
I won’t be surprised if Araneta catches Simsri with a clean shot because this training method — though odd and out-of-this-world — worked perfectly for Lomachenko.
And if a guy with heavy hands executes it perfectly, imagine the damage it could inflict on an opponent.
In boxing, one punch — just one blow — could alter everything.
Even if Simsri is way ahead on the scorecards, you can never count out somebody like Araneta.
But then again, Araneta has got to find the target.
As they say, “you can’t hit what your eyes can’t see.”
