Alas Pilipinas charged back from a set down to trounce Indonesia, 22-25, 25-23, 25-13, 28-26, for a second straight win in Pool B of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Volleyball Nations Cup Sunday at the Dong Anh District Center for Culture, Information and Sports in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The Filipinas picked up steam with a huge second set fightback from a seven-point point deficit before outlasting the Indonesians in a seesaw fourth frame to remain unscathed.
Young guns Alyssa Solomon, Angel Canino and Bella Belen picked up from where veteran Vanie Gandler left off in Alas’ debut sweep of Mongolia last Saturday as the troika delivered double-figure scoring.
Solomon hammered 10 kills and accounted for four of the Filipinas’ 12 kill blocks while also landing three aces for a team-high 17 points before calling it a day early in the fourth frame after tweaking her left ankle.
Canino had 15 points from 11 attacks, including Alas’ last of three match point advantages, three service winners and a kill block while Belen finished with 12 points.
“We prepared well for the match. All of us even those coming off the bench prepared well for Indonesia. We know they are a strong team although they’re a young squad, we expected them to give us a tough challenge,” said Belen, who is expected to be selected as top overall pick in the Premier Volleyball League Rookie Draft held Sunday evening.
“Very happy because the team was able to execute our game plan.”
Canino, the reigning Best Opposite Spiker, was also active in floor defense with 12 digs and three excellent receptions.
Alas got its second wind in the second frame after yielding the first set. The Pinay spikers dominated the third set with superb blockings and floor defense while relentlessly raining down missiles on Indonesia.
The Indonesians took advantage of Alas’ costly errors and coverage lapses to keep the game tight in the fourth, knotting it at 23.
Fifi Sharma pushed Alas at match point but Indonesia countered with an Ersandrina de Vega kill before a Canino spike miscue gave the Indonesians a set point advantage, 25-24.
Alas reached match point once again courtesy of Canino but committed an attack error on the next play for a 26-26 count. The De La Salle University star rebounded with a kill before new Alas recruit Shaina Nitura sealed the victory with a hammer.
Alas, tied with also unbeaten Kazakhstan, will face Iran today at 3 p.m.
Indonesia dropped its second straight loss in as many starts despite De Vega and Viona Ajeng scoring 22 and 21 points, respectively.
