The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) has high hopes that Carlos Yulo will collect gold medals in the 12th Senior Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jecheon, South Korea.
GAP president Cynthia Carrion told DAILY TRIBUNE that Yulo can vie in the five apparatus finals he qualified in: floor exercise, vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar and rings.
Despite getting a bronze medal in the individual all-around with 83.633 points and relinquishing his individual all-around crown to Paris Olympics gold medalist Shinnosuke Oka of Japan, Carrion is still happy as her prized athlete competed for the first time in 10 months.
“Because so many events that hardly any, you know, he was not really training full force. He did very well,” Carrion said.
“I’m sure he’s going to get gold on the floor. I hope he doesn’t fall in the vault, you know, because the guy from Iran (Mahdi Olfati) is so good in vault.”
Yulo will take a crack at the gold in the floor exercise and rings on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the apparatus final for vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bar will be on Sunday.
Also competing at press time is Yulo’s younger brother Karl Eldrew.
As of writing, the younger Yulo is currently in third place with a total score of 75.698 points.
The 16-year-old gymnast is looking to improve from last year’s competition after winning a gold medal in the vault.
