President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will carefully study the proposed P200 increase in the daily minimum wage, citing the need to balance worker welfare with broader economic concerns, Malacañang said Thursday.
“The is the President's message: ‘We will look at the economic implications of this and how to resolve it with the opinion of the wage boards, since the wage boards are also creations of Congress,’” said Palace spokesperson Atty. Claire Castro during a media briefing.
Castro stressed that Marcos is committed to the welfare of Filipino workers. “The President wants to provide what is best for the Filipino labor force,” she added.
This comes a day after the House of Representatives passed on third and final reading House Bill 11376, which mandates a legislated P200 daily wage hike for private sector workers. The measure was overwhelmingly approved with 171 affirmative votes, zero opposition, and one abstention.
The bill proposes a broader and higher adjustment than its Senate counterpart, which earlier passed a P100 daily wage hike.
Before the measure can be enacted into law, both chambers of Congress must reconcile the differing provisions through a bicameral conference committee. Once an enrolled version is finalized, it will be transmitted to the President for signing.
