Getting the rights for Mikey Williams is the easy part.

However, making the talented but controversial guard sign a deal and actually show up in a Converge uniform is a whole new task to accomplish.

No less than FiberXers team owner businessman Dennis Anthony Uy will spearhead the negotiations to get Williams on board in time for the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup.

“It’s better if Sir Dennis Uy handles the negotiations,” Converge team governor Archen Cayabyab said.

The two-time Finals Most Valuable Player was shipped by TNT to the FiberXers in exchange for versatile guard Jordan Heading in a trade approved by the league on Monday.

It was the greenlight both teams had been waiting since coming into terms for the switch five days prior to the approval.

Converge is pressed for time to lure the 33-year-old Williams back as per league rules only allow teams to make changes for their playoffs rosters until noon on 16 July.

The FiberXers are already through to the quarterfinals with a 6-4 win-loss record and are looking to secure a Top 4 finish for a twice-to-beat advantage in the next round.

Williams has not seen action in the PBA since his contract talks with the Tropang 5G management broke down for allegedly “asking for the moon” over two years ago.

The fourth overall pick in the 2020 Draft played for Strong Group in the 2025 Dubai International Basketball Championship back in January.

Williams also watched TNT’s game against Barangay Ginebra in the 2024-2025 Commissioner’s Cup six months ago at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City, sparking speculations of an eventual return.

Head coach Chot Reyes and the TNT management, however, revealed that Williams did not reach out to them for any deal talks.

Speculation for the 6-foot-1 combo guard’s return continued when veteran playmaker Jayson Castro went down with a season-ending injury.
