Manny Pacquiao is not the only legendary guy bracing for a comeback.
Nonito Donaire is another.
The 42-year-old four-division champion is fighting for the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight crown on 14 June in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
His opponent?
Andres Campos of Chile.
This will be Donaire’s first fight in almost two years.
Last time he fought, he dropped a decision to Alejandro Santiago in a bid to snatch the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) 118-pound strap.
The WBA ordered a fight for the interim title following the classification of Japanese Seiya Tsutsumi as “champion in recess.”
Donaire packs a 42-8-2 win-loss-draw card with 28 knockouts while Campos, younger by 14 years, parades a 17-2-1 mark with six knockouts.
If victorious against Campos, Donaire puts himself in a position to vie for bigger bouts down the road given his lofty status and glittering credentials.
A target is reigning WBC titleholder Junto Nakatani, who is expected to run roughshod over Ryosuke Nishida this Sunday.
But that’s going ahead of the story.
Campos could ruin his party plans. Nick Giongco
