Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday called on Filipinos to take proactive steps in preventing the spread of dengue as the country marks Dengue Awareness Month this June.
“Let’s unite in the effort to control the increase or spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes,” Duterte said.
She emphasized the vital role that individuals and households play in combatting the disease, which continues to affect thousands across the country.
"Let's remember that as citizens, our role is crucial in fighting dengue," she said, as she urged the public to support the Department of Health’s (DOH) anti-dengue campaign.
“This disease, caused by mosquitoes that can breed in our homes and communities, is deadly,” the vice president warned. “We are all at risk of being victims of this disease.”
Duterte encouraged everyone to regularly inspect their surroundings for possible mosquito breeding sites — including water containers, old tires, drums, and other household items.
“Inside the house, check the curtains, drawers, under the sofa, wardrobes, and other places which can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes,” she said. “Window screens, doors, and mosquito nets also provide protection.”
She also advised wearing long sleeves and pants, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. “Using insect repellent also helps,” she added.
The vice president further encouraged communities to join local clean-up drives.
“Fighting against dengue is the protection of our family,” Duterte said.
