Holcim Philippines has joined a new regional initiative aimed at advancing sustainable waste management in Northern Mindanao through its waste management unit, Geocycle.
The company is now a member of the Northern Mindanao Regional Ecology Center (NMREC), a public-private collaboration launched through a memorandum of agreement signed by agencies including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The center is based at the DENR compound in Puntod, Cagayan de Oro City.
Geocycle brings to the partnership its expertise in co-processing technology, which transforms non-recyclable waste into alternative fuels for cement production. Holcim said its involvement will support key goals of the NMREC, including waste reduction, circular economy promotion, and improved ecological solid waste practices in compliance with RA 9003 and RA 11898.
In 2024, Geocycle co-processed over 250,000 metric tons of waste, reinforcing its commitment to safe and sustainable disposal methods. The NMREC currently includes 20 institutions and is expected to serve as a model for collaborative environmental governance nationwide.
