From track wars to splashing pool action at the sprawling Ferdinand E. Marcos Memorial Stadium in Laoag City, to other sports being fought on different fronts, it’s all systems go for the thrilling opening day of the 65th Palarong Pambansa today in Ilocos Norte.
Around 15,000 student-athletes from 17 regions, the National Academy of Sports, and the Philippine Schools Overseas converge in the country’s biggest sports meet to vie for honor and glory.
Firing off the medal-rich athletics is the secondary girls’ 3000-meter event, where the first gold is expected to be won. Gun time is at 6 a.m.
Mints are also at stake in the elementary boys’ long jump and elementary girls’ discus throw.
Heats in the goldmine sport swimming as well as preliminaries in gymnastics, tennis, volleyball and basketball will also begin.
All eyes will be on National Capital Region’s bid for an 18th straight overall title but host Ilocos Region along with CALABARZON, Western Visayas and Davao Region are out to topple the dynastic rule of the Big City bets.
A colorful celebration of local culture and festive atmosphere lit up the opening ceremonies, where no less than President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos served as guest of honor.
The proud son of Ilocos Norte, encouraged aspiring athletes to aspire to make a name for themselves.
“Remember, a person who fights never loses. Losers are those who failed to try; winners are those who try and maybe they fail but then they try again, and do not stop trying until they win and succeed,” Marcos said.
“Today, you’re part of the Palarong Pambansa. In the future, you could be representing the Philippines in the Asian Games and the Olympics. So do your best — you have what it takes.”
“Who knows, one of our future Olympic medalists may be among you today.”
The Palarong Pambansa has been the stomping ground for many young Filipino athletes who later gave honor to the country in their respective sports.
