The Aboitiz Foundation Inc., the corporate social responsibility arm of the Aboitiz Group, has partnered with Fulbright Philippines to nurture the next generation of globally competitive Filipino leaders, especially in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
United States (US) Ambassador to the Philippines and Philippine-American Educational Foundation honorary chairperson MaryKay Carlson witnessed Fulbright Philippines executive director Julio Amador III, Fulbright board chair Jessica Simon, Aboitiz Foundation chairman Sabin Aboitiz and Aboitiz Foundation president Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar sign the memorandum of understanding (MOU) to open new avenues for Filipino students to pursue advanced education, training and research in the US that will equip them with the skills and perspectives needed to uplift communities and drive national progress. The signing was held at the ambassador’s residence in Makati City on 14 May.
The collaboration underscores a shared commitment of Aboitiz Foundation and the prestigious international educational exchange program sponsored by the US government to empowering future generations and leaders with world-class talent to be capable of leading in an increasingly dynamic, technology-driven world.
“Our collaboration with Fulbright is anchored on a shared vision: to cultivate globally competitive Filipino talent who will drive meaningful change back home,” said Aboitiz. “Education is the most powerful tool for progress. By investing in our scholars’ global exposure and expertise, we’re investing in a better Philippines — one that is ready to lead in a dynamic, technology-driven world.”
This vision is brought to life by individuals like Maria Janela Cantre, a Fulbright alumna who now plays a key role in the strategy team of AboitizPower, the energy arm of Aboitiz Equity Ventures. Cantre is an Economics graduate, magna cum laude, from the University of the Philippines. She obtained a Master of Energy Economics degree at the Rice University in Houston, Texas.
Her journey reflects the transformative potential of global learning experiences.
“Fulbright gave me the global perspective and training to contribute meaningfully to the energy sector back home. Now, at AboitizPower, I get to support nation-building through reliable and sustainable energy. It’s truly fulfilling to see Fulbright and Aboitiz Foundation come together to create more opportunities for future leaders,” she shared.
More than just a partnership, this collaboration symbolizes a long-term investment in human capital. By providing Filipino students with access to world-class education and research opportunities, the Aboitiz Foundation and Fulbright Philippines are empowering future leaders to bring back knowledge, expertise, and global insights that will benefit Filipino communities and industries.
“For the United States, investing in STEM education strengthens our economic ties with the Philippines and supports US industries operating in the region, especially in energy, technology and research,” Carlson said.
“We at PAEF and the Fulbright Program believe that the private sector plays an important role in national development by providing opportunities for Filipinos to attain graduate degrees, conduct research, and join training programs in the fields of STEM, energy, natural resources, sustainability, and environmental protection. This MOU with Aboitiz Foundation Inc. is historic because it is the first such partnership with a private sector foundation in the country,” Amador III said.
As the Philippines navigates rapid technological and societal changes, initiatives like these are essential in building a resilient, future-ready nation. The Aboitiz Foundation expresses its deep appreciation to Fulbright Philippines and the US Embassy for this opportunity to collaborate on a transformative endeavor, confident that its impact will resonate far beyond the classroom — shaping the country’s progress for generations to come.
