An ex-convict was gunned down in cold blood while two other wanted suspects for theft were discovered already detained inside the Manila City Jail, in separate developments involving former detainees in the city.

An ex-convict identified as Ernesto Tibay, 44, died after he was shot twice in the head while seated in his pedicab early Friday morning at the corner of Daisy Street and San Sebastian Street in Barangay 111, Tondo, Manila.

Tibay, a resident of the same barangay, was rushed to the Tondo Medical Center but was declared dead around 9 a.m. due to gunshot wounds to the head.

Police arrested the alleged gunman, Eduardo Rinon, 28, also an ex-convict previously jailed for illegal drug-related charges, in a follow-up operation shortly after the incident.

According to the Manila Police District–Police Station 1, the shooting occurred at approximately 1:20 a.m. Investigators suspect that the motive for the killing is drug-related, citing the backgrounds of both the victim and the suspect.

Police said the suspect’s arrest was the result of an intense follow-up operation. He is now detained at the police station and will face murder charges to be filed before the Manila City Prosecutor’s Office.

In a separate case, elements of the Manila Police District–Police Station 12 (MPD-PS12) served arrest warrants to two wanted theft suspects, who turned out to be already incarcerated at the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory for different charges.

The two suspects were identified as Alibaser Maharom y Maamon, an unemployed resident of Barangay 310, Sta. Cruz, Manila; and Gerald Daroy y Soleres, alias Gerald Daroy, 31, single, unemployed, from Star Street, Tondo, Manila.

Police served the arrest warrants inside the jail facility Friday afternoon. The warrants were issued by Judge Hazel Angeline Q. Abenoja, of the Municipal Trial Court in Cities, Fourth Judicial Region, Biñan, Laguna, dated 25 April 2025. The two are facing charges of theft, with a recommended bail of P6,000 each.
