The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines Reserve Command (AFPRESCOM) have partnered to establish a military-affiliated reserve unit, aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness and securing the country's critical energy infrastructure.
Under a newly signed memorandum of agreement, the Meralco AFP Affiliated Reserve Unit will enable the military to tap Meralco’s technical expertise in power distribution to help energize essential facilities during local or national emergencies. The collaboration also seeks to complement AFP’s manpower during disaster response and security operations.
“This only means that the task in handling or addressing the national security issues of our country is not only in the hands of a few, but is a shared responsibility by all,” said AFPRESCOM Commander BGen. Ferdinand Geminic P. Ramirez.
Department of Energy Undersecretary and military reservist Felix William Fuentebella, who witnessed the signing, described the partnership as necessary in reinforcing energy security, commending Meralco for its ongoing contributions to the energy sector and national readiness.
The agreement encourages Meralco employees to volunteer as reservists to help secure power infrastructure, participate in emergency operations and security drills, and ensure business continuity during crises.
“This partnership is about ensuring energy resilience whether in times of natural calamities or manmade challenges,” said Meralco First Vice President and Head of Networks Froilan J. Savet.
Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho emphasized that the initiative provides a platform for employees to contribute to national service while maintaining their roles in the company.
“Through this partnership, we can elevate Meralco’s emergency preparedness and disaster response capabilities. Rest assured that Meralco will not only keep the lights on, we stand ready to support the AFP and the Filipino people whenever we are needed,” Aperocho added.
