President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., speaking at the 83rd commemoration of “Araw ng Kagitingan” at Mount Samat National Shrine in Pilar, Bataan on Wednesday, emphasized that the solution to war is not further conflict but peace, as he called for unity among all parties to achieve lasting peace.

Reflecting on the lessons learned from the hardships of World War II, he emphasized the importance of working together for a peaceful future.

“Peace cannot be achieved by one person or one country alone,” Marcos said. “We must unite all parties involved, as these are the lessons we must carry forward. We cannot let the sacrifices made in the past be in vain, and we must work to build a future where conflict is avoided.”

Marcos also celebrated the valor and courage of the Filipino people, pointing out that acts of heroism extend beyond the battlefield and are demonstrated in everyday life, especially in times of crisis.

He honored the heroes of World War II, whose bravery during the Battle of Bataan continues to inspire the efforts to protect the nation and build a better future.

“This year’s commemoration reminds us that our country is the home of heroes — individuals who, at great personal cost, gave everything for the freedom of our nation,” he said. “Valor is not just about strength in the face of adversity, but also about small acts of kindness, compassion, and generosity that ripple out to create positive change in our communities.”

Marcos encouraged Filipinos to follow the example of their forebears by advancing causes that improve the lives of their countrymen, particularly by prioritizing unity, service and community development.

“Through acts of genuine service, we prove that we are the rightful heirs of their heroic legacy,” he said. “By helping one another and working together, we honor their sacrifices and continue their struggle for a better Philippines.”

The event was attended by key dignitaries, including US Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Robert Ewing, Japanese Ambassador Enzo Kazuya and other members of the diplomatic corps, government officials such as Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro and Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Romeo Brawner Jr.

The Battle of Bataan, fought from 7 January to 9 April 1942, was a crucial and tragic chapter in Philippine history during the Second World War. It saw Filipino and American forces fighting valiantly against the Japanese Imperial Army following the attack on Pearl Harbor and the subsequent invasion of the Philippines.

The commemoration on Mount Samat serve as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifices made by those who fought for the country’s freedom.
