David Archuleta: When identity shapes music

Music is often used as a means of expressing emotions and creativity. For singer-songwriter David Archuleta, however, embracing his identity has transformed and redefined his musicality.

Archuleta is back with a fresh sound, unveiling his latest single, "Crème Brulée" — a sweet and sultry pop confection that marks a bold departure from his signature heartfelt ballads. The track, his first playful and irresistibly flirty release, serves as the lead single from his upcoming EP, set to drop this summer.

Written by Archuleta alongside Ryan Nealon and Robyn Dell’Unto and produced by Michael Blum, "Crème Brulée" reflects his evolution both as an artist and as a person. The song captures a period of self-discovery, highlighting his queer identity and Latin roots while showcasing his impressive vocal range.

“I think just by exploring my queerness in life — accepting it, embracing it — it naturally comes into the music,” Archuleta shared. “I was always so shy before, and now I’m like, you know what? Screw it. I'm just here to have a good time and for life to be enjoyed.”

'Sexier, more sensual'

At 34, Archuleta says he is allowing himself to experience the moments he missed in his younger years.

“I’m finally having my time to learn and try new things, and it’s been a blast. I think that comes out in 'Crème Brulée' and a lot of my writing. It’s fun to feel a little sexier and more sensual, but still be me.”

Rather than leaning into the mainstream trend of overtly sensual gay aesthetics in music, Archuleta is crafting a more understated and gender-fluid artistic identity. Through this approach, he hopes his music will resonate more broadly, capturing the diverse experiences within the LGBTQ+ community.

The official music video for "Crème Brulée", released on 25 March 2025, is a visually striking, intricately choreographed dance piece directed by Nathan Kim. The video features Archuleta alongside the JA Collective dance trio, embracing his love for movement and performance.

“The 'Crème Brulée' video was so much fun to make with the choreography — it was a new creative release for me,” he said. “I’ve always loved moving to music, and the more I’ve taken choreography classes, the more I’ve found an outlet to feel liberated and express myself.”

“Dancing brings me a newfound confidence. It makes me feel more in touch with my body and sensuality,” he added.

Looking ahead, Archuleta shared that he is embracing a more playful and sensual vibe with his music. Fans can expect more releases in this style, as he hopes to create music that others can enjoy and connect with.

With 'Crème Brulée', David Archuleta is not just reinventing his sound — he’s embracing the freedom to be fully and unapologetically himself.
