Some love stories are written in the sky; others in the heartbeats of hospital corridors. Dr. Elmart Yap and Nurse Erika’s love bloomed amid the bustle of emergency rooms, sleepless nights and unrelenting commitment to saving lives. After years of juggling their medical jobs and a long-distance love, they are now getting set to walk down the aisle.
Their story began when Erika, a nurse, met Elmart, a fourth-year medical student, during his first hospital stay as a doctor-in-training. While he was still learning the ropes, she was an experienced nurse who guided him through the high-pressure environment of the ER.
Elmart vividly remembers the moment he saw Erika in a different light. “She was attending to a patient, and I was just observing. That’s when I realized how genuine she was not just as a nurse but as a person. I saw her beyond the uniform, beyond the professional setting, and I knew she was special.”
For Erika, it was Elmart’s sincerity and seriousness about their relationship that stood out. “He took our relationship seriously from the beginning. He never played around, never made me doubt his intentions. I always knew where we stood, and that was important to me.”
Elmart’s proposal was as spontaneous as it was heartfelt.
While presenting a research paper at an Asian ENT Summit in Vietnam, he decided he couldn’t wait any longer. “I was about to finish my grueling residency, and I just knew I wanted to spend my life with her. She flew to Vietnam just to see me, and the moment she arrived at my hotel room, I proposed. No grand gestures, just us. It felt right.”
The couple endured over six years of long-distance love, with Elmart spending most of his time in Australia. Their secret? “Communication. It was never easy, but we made sure we always talked, always updated each other about our lives,” Erika shared.
Despite the distance, their love remained constant, demonstrating that commitment is more than just proximity — it is the unbreakable desire to stay together no matter how far apart they are.
Erika has taken the lead in organizing their wedding, which is now in its final stages. Her vision? A meaningful celebration among people who genuinely appreciate their relationship.
“I want our wedding to be filled with people who are genuinely happy for us — not just guests who are there out of obligation.”
While she initially envisioned an intimate wedding, Elmart reminded her, “You only get married once — make it grand.” And so, they found a balance between their dream celebration and practicality.
Their chosen venue, St. Benedict Parish in Cavite, was love at first sight for Erika. “I saw a photo of the church on social media and told myself, ‘If I ever get married, I want it to be here.’”
For their reception, they meticulously scouted locations before deciding on Antigo de la Cumbre. “It’s just 19 minutes away from the church, and when we visited, we felt that ‘this is it’ moment. There was chemistry between us and the place,” Erika recalled.
They, like any other couple planning a wedding, faced unforeseen challenges such as hidden fees, logistical issues, and paperwork issues.
Despite the challenges, they are embracing every step of the journey with the same teamwork that got them through years of residency, distance and career struggles.
The couple is counting down the days until their wedding on 3 April. From the ER to the altar, their journey has been anything but usual, but it illustrates their unwavering love and commitment.
As they prepare to exchange vows again, this time in front of their loved ones, one thing is certain: their love will endure in sickness and health, over miles and milestones, forever.
