De La Salle University star Angel Canino is now in stable condition after colliding with Shevana Laput during their grueling five-set win over University of Santo Tomas in Season 87 University Athletic Association of the Philippines women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday.

A DAILY TRIBUNE source said all tests, including CT scan, came out negative and Canino was allowed to be discharged from the Makati Medical Center past midnight on Sunday.

She is now in stable condition but the Lady Spikers have yet to confirm whether she will see action in their titanic battle against Ateneo de Manila University on Wednesday.

“We would like to inform everyone that Angel Canino is currently in stable condition and is under close supervision,” La Salle said in a statement.

“We are grateful for the outpouring of support and concern. At this time, we kindly ask for continued prayers and privacy as Angel focuses on her recovery.”

Canino suffered a hard blow on her neck after colliding with Laput who lost her balance after an attack in the fourth set of their marathon battle against the Tigresses.

She was seen wincing in pain but still soldiered on to deliver a game-high 27 points built on 24 attacks, two blocks and an ace, along with 13 excellent receptions and 13 digs.

She, however, couldn’t hold back the tears due to exhaustion and emotion as the La Salle medical staff, headed by team doctor Dr. Jo-Ann Lorenzo, escorted her to a waiting ambulance.

“Actually, we asked the medical staff and the ambulance to be on standby as early as the fourth set,” said a La Salle insider, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“We want to make sure that Angel will be alright after that scary collision with Shevana.”
