Sayak Airport, better known as Siargao Airport, is set for long-overdue upgrades as the Department of Transportation (DoTr) moves forward with rehabilitation plans aimed at easing overcrowding and enhancing the passenger experience.
This comes as Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon — who inspected the airport on Sunday — ordered the immediate removal of the VIP lounge to make room for passenger s, who continue to flock to the country’s surfing capital.
“Our people and tourists here are really struggling. It’s extremely crowded and hot! I ordered the removal of this VIP lounge — it’s unnecessary — and the space can be used to provide even a little more room for passengers,” said the irked DoTr secretary.
To further streamline operations, he also directed the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to remove redundant X-ray machines to expedite security checks and build a modular expansion to increase seating capacity.
With 17 daily flights, Siargao Airport has been struggling with congestion, highlighting the need for long-term improvements and Dizon said the airport is being considered as a future international gateway, emphasizing its role in boosting tourism.
“We will focus on expanding and improving Siargao Airport as an international gateway, reflecting the growing importance of Siargao Island as one of the country’s top tourist destinations,” Dizon said.
He instructed CAAP to fast-track runway expansion plans and the development of a new world-class passenger terminal to support Siargao’s growing tourism sector.
Siargao Airport, located in Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte, serves as the island’s primary access point and is classified as a Class 2 principal airport by CAAP.
