As the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 volleyball tournament unfolds, Far Eastern University (FEU) head coach Tina Salak highlights a crucial aspect often overshadowed by competition — academics.

Salak, a former UAAP standout herself, noted that the “student” side of student-athletes has never been more pronounced than it is today.

Recognizing the increasing academic demands on her players, she has made it a priority to adapt training sessions accordingly.

“Even though they are struggling, staying up late for their studies, and exhausted from training, we make sure to incorporate fun activities and happy moments in our sessions,” Salak said.

“It’s draining. I’ve been through it myself — waking up early, going through the same routine, feeling exhausted all over again.”

Beyond the physical toll, Salak acknowledges the mental and emotional fatigue that athletes endure, particularly during high-pressure matches.

Drawing from her own experiences, Salak now puts greater emphasis on the psychological well-being of her players, something that was not as openly discussed during her playing career.

“When I see my players not performing at their peak, I consider many factors,” she said.

“It’s not just about what I see in training. I take into account how they are coping as students. Many of them are cramming for their midterms.”

Salak emphasized that academic stress should not be mistaken for a lack of commitment or respect toward their opponents.

“They are trying, I know they are trying,” she said.

“Maybe something is lacking, or maybe there’s too much of something. It’s all about finding the right balance.”
