President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. lauded the Philippine Army for being a "pillar of strength and stability," emphasizing that regardless of the trials — be it in combat, crisis, or calamity — the service has consistently remained steadfast and faithful to its duty.
At the Philippine Army’s 128th anniversary celebration at Fort Andres Bonifacio in Taguig City on Saturday, Marcos said soldiers have once again proven that their service goes beyond just defense.
“From strengthening our operations to enhancing our ability to detect, respond to, and recover from threats, it has played a vital role in fortifying our nation’s security,” Marcos said.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining one’s principles and integrity in the face of challenges, noting that the military is expected to serve sincerely and without expecting anything in return.
“In today's time, the courage and skill of a soldier are not enough. What is needed is a resolve that remains unshaken in the face of trials, principles that are not bent by fear or apprehension, and a heart that is always ready to serve faithfully without expecting anything in return,” he said in Filipino.
He added that in any institution, having rank or power is not enough.
“The true measure is the willingness to set aside one's personal interests for a higher purpose. Although we all play different roles, our shared goal should be to build a more united, just, and truly peaceful nation,” Marcos added in Filipino.
Marcos reminded members of the Philippine Army to continue serving selflessly for a greater cause.
“As we mark the 128th Founding Anniversary, we are again reminded why we choose to serve. We do it not for ourselves, but also for the countless generations that will come after us,” he said.
He recognized that soldiers have proven their service extends far beyond the battlefield.
“Whether responding to natural calamities or assisting communities affected by the recent volcanic activities such as what happens in Taal and the Kanlaon volcanoes, they were our first responders. They have proven themselves to be ready, reliable, and resolute in their sworn oath to their duty to our people,” he said.
Marcos also assured continued government support to ensure the Army remains “always ready” to fulfill its mission of defending the country.
“As your Commander-in-Chief, I enjoin you to stay relentless in your pursuit of excellence. Sharpen your skills, master your craft, and embrace innovation. After all, the Philippine Army's strength extends beyond firepower. It draws from its personnel's honor, integrity, and fortitude,” he said.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the road ahead is not easy. There will be delays, frustrations, and challenges as they always are. Our strength and resolve will continue to be tested,” Marcos added.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to further enhancing military capability and welfare.
“We are equipping you with the arsenal to champion our rights and protect our national interests,” Marcos said.
He also emphasized the importance of military exercises to improve combat readiness and threat response.
The President noted that in modern warfare, adaptability and discipline are more essential than ever as cyberspace has emerged as the new frontline.
“Ours is a world that continues to evolve. Threats have grown increasingly more complex, and the battleground is no longer contained in land — it now extends into cyberspace and beyond,” he said.
“And yet, through all this, the Philippine Army has never wavered,” he added.
Marcos commended the Army’s efforts to strengthen cybersecurity capabilities, adding that courage and skill must now be paired with digital readiness.
He also highlighted the issuance of Executive Order No. 84, which increases the subsistence allowance for Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) personnel.
While recognizing the sacrifices made by soldiers, especially in areas plagued by lawlessness, Marcos expressed hope that government support would help them carry out their duties more effectively.
“Although nothing can compare to the sacrifices they make for our country, we hope that we will be able to support you in better fulfilling your duties,” he said in Filipino.
The President also praised the leadership of Army Chief Lieutenant General Roy Galido, saying his standard of excellence has upheld the Army’s credibility.
“To Lieutenant General Roy Galido, your leadership continues to inspire the men and women under your command. Your standard of excellence ensures that the Philippine Army remains worthy of our people’s trust and respect,” he said.
He concluded by thanking soldiers who have gone beyond the call of duty and expressed confidence that the Army will remain steadfast.
"I have no doubt, the Philippine Army will stand the best, will stand firm, as it always has in the past 128 years,” Marcos said.
