The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has donated trash traps and flood control equipment to the Parañaque City government in an effort to reduce flooding during heavy rains.

Parañaque City Mayor Eric Olivarez said the trash traps will be distributed to the city’s 10 communities: Barangays San Isidro, Moonwalk, San Dionisio, San Antonio, BF Homes, Vitalez, Merville, Don Bosco, Tambo and Don Galo.

Each barangay will also receive plastic pontoons, life vests, and other equipment.

“This donation is a big help to our city as it will assist in mitigating flooding,” Olivarez said as he also expressed gratitude to MMDA chairperson Atty. Don Artes for the donation, which will help clean the city’s waterways and support environmental goals.

The MMDA and Parañaque City government have installed 25 trash traps across the city’s waterways and drainage systems to address flooding. The project aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s “Kalinisan sa Bagong Pilipinas” campaign.

Artes turned over the equipment to the local government on Monday.

“With the turnover of 25 trash traps, including sets of tools for operations and maintenance, it will prevent wastes from clogging waterways and drainage systems as well as reduce the occurrence of flooding,” Artes said during the ceremonial signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) for the project.

The MoA was signed by Artes, Mayor Olivarez, and First District Representative Edwin Olivarez at Parañaque City Hall.

The trash traps are expected to reduce waste in waterways and prevent it from reaching pumping stations and Manila Bay.

“Aside from the environmental and health hazards caused by solid waste in the waterways, the integrity of the components of the pumping stations are also compromised, affecting the effectiveness and efficiency of its operation, especially during heavy rains,” Artes said.
