The Sunday roast is an English tradition where families eat together after Sunday worship — and what they enjoy is a hearty plateful of roasted meat, roasted potatoes and what is called the Yorkshire pudding, which is not a pudding as we know it, but a kind of baked pastry.
Those unfamiliar with this British meal should know that other than the meat and potatoes, bread and gravy, condiments and vegetables, the Sunday roast is a special lunch or dinner that gathers people together, making it a tradition worth emulating.
Or, at least, experiencing.
While you’re at it, why not start out with the Sunday Roast at Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill in Newport World Resorts.
“This one (in Manila) is really the typical one. The dishes that you see here are all created by our team in London. We flew in our culinary director, He’s here with us for almost three weeks. The chefs here are mostly Filipinos; we only have two expats,” said the restaurant’s general manager Ryan Behr, who has been with Ramsay for eight years now, opening some of his dining concepts in different parts of the world.
Behr said the Manila Gordon Ramsay is “really a fun concept, it’s not fine dining — really authentic home cooking you will see. Gordon signatures — you will find Beef Wellington, Fish and Chips (using local grouper) — really you see him cook in the TV shows, really what he is known for.”
The Sunday Roast at Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill comes with a Pea & Asparagus Soup — creamy smooth and green yet savory — and choice of Sticky Toffee Pudding (must-try!) or their signature Chocolate Tart for dessert. The Sunday Roast Beef is a beautiful pair of Black Opal beef striploin, perfectly done; beef fat-roasted potatoes, “nice and fluffy and crispy,” just as the GM described; red wine gravy and a generous serving of horseradish cream, served with Crispy Yorkshire pudding (unlimited), green beans and watercress.
The set menu (at P3,888) comes with an option to order a serving of Roasted Pork Belly (at P600).
