Benedict Yalung, son of renowned action film director Ben Yalung (M7), is charting his own path while honoring his father's legacy. Ben, known for films starring Fernando Poe Jr. and Bong Revilla, instilled in Benedict a deep appreciation for filmmaking.
Growing up on his father’s film sets, Benedict didn’t just admire the scenes but “admired him” — his father’s dedication and passion for directing.
“Ako lang ang medyo sumusunod sa Dad ko eh. I try to follow his footsteps,” Benedict said in a recent interview.
Though Ben shifted to religious filmmaking and now heads the Asia Pacific Film Institute, Benedict chose a corporate route, leading the digital agency Universal Vision.
However, the cinematic influence of his father remains. Benedict has even entertained the idea of remaking "Anak ni Zuma," one of M7's most iconic films.
The 1987 film, which inspired the 2013 TV series "Galema: Anak ni Zuma," holds a special place in Philippine cinema. Benedict and his father have considered the idea of a remake, but Benedict recognizes the challenge of modernizing a classic. “Iba na [ang mga actors] ngayon. Iba na ang [filmmaking] ngayon,” he said, acknowledging how much the industry has changed.
He also pointed out that film trends are shifting, noting, “Hindi ka na pwedeng basta-basta maglabas kasi alam mo naman ang trend ng movies ngayon. Iba na ang storya, kailangan may [genre] na hindi gaya ng araw.” Benedict stressed the importance of compelling narratives, manageable budgets, and accessible distribution in today’s cinematic world.
Despite his success in the corporate world, Benedict remains deeply connected to his father’s legacy, expressing ongoing gratitude for the guidance he received during his formative years.
