Barangay Addition Hills in Mandaluyong City has come up with an innovative way to eradicate dengue-spreading mosquitoes. To encourage residents to get rid of mosquitoes, it has offered one peso for every five dead or alive mosquito larvae they could find.
The response has been good as people collect mosquito larvae in plastic bags filled with water and exchange them for a few pesos from village officials.
Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa, however, warned that people may breed mosquitoes for the incentive, DAILY TRIBUNE reported.
Additionally, Herbosa said people might catch male instead of female mosquito larvae.
“The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the primary carrier of dengue,” he said, adding that the barangay may be paying for the wrong kind of mosquito and lose money, according to Daily Tribune.
The secretary said cleaning up one’s surroundings to get rid of mosquito breeding grounds is better.
Meanwhile, scientist Sam Beach from Australia’s Macquarie University unveiled a new technology to kill dengue and malaria mosquitoes.
“This innovative solution could transform how we manage pests, offering hope for healthier communities and a more sustainable future,” Beach said, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Researchers are undertaking trials where male mosquitoes are genetically modified to have toxins in their semen that will kill female mosquitoes they mate with.
