Barangay Ginebra barely broke a sweat in a clinical dismantling of dejected NorthPort, 127-100, in Game 3 to move within a win of booking a championship seat in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
It was the same story as the first two matches of the best-of-seven semifinals with the Kings firing at will on their way to another blowout and an imposing 3-0 series lead.
Ginebra will try to bring out the broom on Wednesday in Game 4.
“Our first group came out and played well and our second group led by Jamie (Malonzo) and RJ (Abarrientos) just played great. First group was good, the second group was great,” Kings coach Tim Cone said.
Malonzo poured 25 points on 7-of-11 field goal shooting including a 4-of-5 clip from the three-point area and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Kings, who for the third straight game tallied 36 assists. Ginebra sank 14-of-24 from the three-point area.
Ginebra rained down six triples in a strong second quarter showing where it outscored the hapless Batang Pier, 34-19, setting the tone for a yawner of a lopsided match.
The Kings sustained their massive assault in the second half where they established a 38-point lead after Maverick Ahanmisi drilled a trey for a 112-74 gap with 8:37 left in the game.
Resident import Justin Brownlee flirted with a triple-double with 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, Japeth Aguilar had 17 markers and seven boards, Scottie Thompson registered 15 points while Troy Rosario finished with 10 for Ginebra.
Rookie guard RJ Abarrientos had 10 points and 10 assists for the Kings, whose bench mob provided 58 points compared to 39 from their counterparts.
NorthPort tried to keep up with Ginebra in the first 12 minutes of the game but got buried by nine heading into the second quarter.
Kadeem Jack led the Batang Pier with 32 points, Arvin Tolentino played his best offensive outing in the series so far with 15 markers while Paoilo Taha had 11.
