THE campaign against loose firearms in Maguindanao del Sur continues to gain ground, with more local officials and civilians turning over their unlicensed guns to military authorities, officials said Tuesday.

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Political aspirants in Mamasapano, Maguindanao surrendered about 13 high-powered firearms of different calibers to soldiers of the 33rd IB at their headquarters in Radjah Buayan, Maguindanao del Sur.
Joint Task Force-Central Commander Brig Gen Donald M. Gumiran said yesterday political candidates in Mamasapano voluntarily yielded 13 firearms to the 33rd Infantry (Makabayan) Battalion in Barangay Zapakan in Radjah Buayan, Maguindanao del Sur on Monday.
Gumiran said the surrender was a result of a Political Candidates Forum held among the running candidates in Mamasapano also on Monday.
Political Candidates Forum activity was attended by local officials, barangay chiefs and representatives from Civil Society Organizations, the religious sector and other stakeholders.
According to Gumiran Mamasapano Mayor Akmad “Butch” Ampatuan Jr. personally encouraged the residents and candidates vying for the different political positions in the upcoming polls to surrender their loose firearms to help promote peace and security in their area.
“The voluntary surrender of weapons is part of the government’s efforts under the Small Arms and Light Weapons Management Program.
It aims to stop the spread of illegal weapons, dismantle armed groups, reduce crime and violence, and promote a culture of peace and security in the region.
Gumiran praised the initiative of the Local Government Unit of Mamasapano and the continued efforts of the military to dismantle illegal weapons in the region.
