The Philippine Squash Academy (PSA) will train with Korean players in Manila for a six-day camp in preparation for the Philippine Satellite Tour 1 which will take place from 6 to 9 March.
PSA executive director Robert Bachmann told DAILY TRIBUNE that the camp was made possible by Kayod Pilipinas head coach Wee Wern Low as she invited the Korean squash players to come to the country.
“See, it’s all coach Wee Wern. They all want to train under her,” said Bachmann, who is also the president of the Southeast Asian Squash Federation.
“Since the coach cannot accept jobs from other countries or other foreign players, what she does is, she invites them over here because she’s already under contract with the Philippines. They can join our training here and then it’s good for our players because we get to spar with different international players.”
Low, 34, has a glittering resume in the world of squash.
The former Malaysian squash player hit as high as No. 5 in the world rankings and was an Asian Games gold medalist in 2010 (Doha) and 2014 (Incheon).
Low also led Malaysia to a silver medal finish in the 2014 Women’s World Team Squash Championships.
Bachmann hopes Low’s papers will be sorted by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) by Friday.
“To extend the working visa, we need documentation from the PSC. So that’s what we’re waiting for,” Bachmann said.
“Because right now, she chooses the competitions that we join, and even the PSA (Professional Squash Association) World Tour membership fee, that’s annual, she’s able to get discounts for our players, so we don’t have to spend so much. She’s done a lot.”
