Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla said on Saturday that he will ensure that police officers engaging in partisan politics would face prosecution.
“I will not hesitate to have them charged and to make sure that due process of law is observed,” he said. “You have seen my record. I have a very low tolerance for malfeasance, especially in the Philippine National Police.”
Remulla reiterated the same message during a press conference in Baguio City as part of his visit to the Police Regional Office-Cordillera Administrative Region in La Trinidad, Benguet.
He cited the DILG’s efforts in filing cases against rogue PNP members involved in the 990-kilo drug haul in Manila in 2022.
“I reviewed those cases immediately, and now they are in jail. So I will not hesitate,” he said.
He expressed full support for the Commission on Elections’ “Kontra Bigay” campaign against vote-buying, saying it should be paired with a “Kontra Tanggap” drive.
“There should be two campaigns — Kontra Bigay and Kontra Tanggap. These are two sides of the same issue and must go together,” he said.
He also stated that he has never believed in vote-buying, even during his tenure as a local official in Cavite.
“I don’t believe in vote-buying either. It’s never been necessary in our province, but it is a cultural phenomenon that must be addressed nationally,” Remulla said.
