Dam fine: beavers save Czech treasury $1 million

This handout photo received on 11 February 2025 from AOPK CR and taken on 3 February 2025 shows an Eurasian beaver in a protected wetland area in Vesin, Padrtske rybniky, Central Bohemia south of Prague, Czech Republic. Beavers have saved Czech taxpayers' money as they stole a march on the state in creating a planned wetland before excavators got the green light, a conservationist said on 11 February 2025. Conservationists wanted to reduce sedimentation and curb sour water leaving the ponds as both threatened the critically endangered crayfish living in the river below. The project drafted in 2018 had a building permit but was delayed by talks over the land. But beavers did not care and started doing their natural job by building at least four dams.
