At least 232 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered and began a reintegration program in Davao de Oro, marking a significant step in the government’s effort to quell the communist insurgency.
Special Assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo Jr. welcomed the former rebels, stressing the government’s commitment to ending the armed conflict and reintegrating former fighters into mainstream society.
“This is not just about surrendering arms, but a new beginning, a new hope for those ready to change their lives,” Lagdameo said.
Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said the NPA’s strength has declined sharply, with rebel numbers falling to 1,111 in 2024 from 2,200 the previous year.
The former rebels received food packs and kitchen kits from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), P5,000 in financial assistance from the Office of the President, and local support from provincial officials.
Lagdameo expressed hope that the surrenders would encourage other insurgents to follow suit.
“To all those who surrendered and chose peace, we salute your courage and your decision to change your lives. What you have done today is an inspiration for others to follow in your footsteps,” said Lagdameo.
The former rebels will enroll in the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), which will assist them in their reintegration.
The event was also attended by military officers and local chief executives, including Bukidnon Governor Rogelio Neil Roque and Davao Occidental Governor Atty. Franklin P. Bautista.
