Senator Christopher “Bong” Go reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Tricycle Operators and Drivers' Association (TODA) during a General Assembly at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City on Wednesday, 5 February. The event, attended by approximately 600 TODA members, emphasized Go’s long-standing support for the sector.
In his speech, Go emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of TODA members, acknowledging the challenges they face, such as rising fuel prices and vehicle maintenance costs. He assured the group that their concerns would be communicated to the relevant government agencies.
Go also took the opportunity to recall his first encounter with NCR TODA president Ismael “Ace” Sevilla in 2018, which led to the creation of the TODA Summit in 2019. This summit, initiated by Go and former president Rodrigo Duterte, allowed the sector to voice concerns, including issues related to uniform regulations.
“Alam n’yo about 6 years ago, nagkakilala po kami ni Sir Ismael. Kumain lang po ako diyan sa karinderya dito sa Pasay. Diyan po nag-umpisa ang aking relasyon sa mga TODA. Lumapit po siya and the rest is history. Full support po ako sa inyo, sa mga TODA members natin lalong-lalo na po ‘yung mga mahihirap nating kababayan,” Senator Go shared.
("You know, about 6 years ago, I met Sir Ismael. I was just eating at a small eatery here in Pasay. That’s where my relationship with the TODA started. He approached me, and the rest is history. I offer my full support to you, especially to our TODA members, particularly to our less fortunate fellow countrymen.")
Sevilla expressed his gratitude for Go's unwavering support, calling him “Kuya ng TODA” and recognizing his consistent efforts to uplift the transport sector. He also highlighted Go's Malasakit Centers program, which has provided medical and financial assistance to many TODA members, particularly during the pandemic.
Senator Go, who authored the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, expressed pride in the program's success, noting that over 15 million Filipinos have benefited from the centers nationwide.
During the assembly, Go distributed various forms of support, including meals, grocery packs, and sports equipment, to attendees. He also assured continued engagement with concerned agencies to address livelihood concerns within the sector.
In closing, Go reiterated his commitment to serve the people, stating, “As your Mr. Malasakit, I will continue to bring government services to those who need it most.” Earlier in the day, Go also visited fire victims in Tondo, Manila, further underscoring his dedication to public service.
