Following a series of discussions with partner organizations, super app Grab Philippines has launched the Grab CommuniKit, a visual communication tool designed to bridge the gap between passengers and deaf driver-partners.
Grab said on Friday that the tool consists of a set of postcards featuring commonly used phrases and requests during GrabCar rides, crafted for easy readability and facilitating communication on topics such as directions, drop-off points, and special requests like air conditioning adjustments.
Developed in collaboration with leading organizations advocating for the inclusion of deaf individuals — such as DeafED Philippines, the National Association of Sign Language Interpreters, and a community of PWD Grab driver-partners — the kit aligns with industry standards for effective communication tailored to the needs of the deaf community.
“In championing inclusive success for everyone in the digital economy, we are fully dedicated to ensuring that no one is left behind,” said Grab Philippines country head Ronald Roda.
“As we create livelihood opportunities for tens of thousands of our kababayans, our goal is to empower marginalized groups such as deaf drivers to access the same tech-enabled opportunities — serving as a catalyst for achieving their aspirations while contributing as integral members of our fleet, regardless of their disability.”
The Grab CommuniKit is compact and easy to use, typically stored in the central console organizer of GrabCar vehicles. In addition to the postcards, the kit includes a whiteboard and marker for passengers and driver-partners to exchange personalized messages or requests.
