The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization – Regional Center for Educational Innovation and Technology (SEAMEO INNOTECH) recently marked its 55th anniversary, reflecting on its ongoing contributions to education and innovation in Southeast Asia.
For over five decades, SEAMEO INNOTECH has supported educators and learners through a variety of programs and initiatives, including work on the K-12 curriculum and the development of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) 2.0.
During the anniversary event, SEAMEO INNOTECH Centre Director Dr. Leonor Magtolis-Briones led the celebration highlighted the organization's commitment to shaping education in the region. She noted, “With a steadfast commitment to its mission, the Center continues to shape the future of education in Southeast Asia and beyond. As we move forward with artificial intelligence and new advancements in education, we also champion the harmony of science, technology and the humanities to promote human-centered solutions in teaching, learning, and research.”
Under Dr. Briones’ leadership, SEAMEO INNOTECH has introduced initiatives such as a competency framework for teachers, an international youth-led conference, and a national series on artificial intelligence. These efforts have helped the organization expand its reach and impact, reflected in its high satisfaction ratings from clients.
The anniversary event also featured speeches from key figures, including Dr. Gina Gonong, Undersecretary for Curriculum and Teaching at the Department of Education, who recognized the organization’s role in training over 181,000 educators in recent years. Congressman Ron Salo also spoke about SEAMEO INNOTECH’s lasting influence, noting that its efforts have had a significant impact on learners, communities, and international collaboration.
Looking ahead, SEAMEO INNOTECH is set to host an international conference on artificial intelligence this year, bringing together educators, experts and policymakers to explore and refine a multi-sectoral framework that ensures inclusive and effective AI integration in education.
