Following the success of Carlos Yulo in the Paris Olympics, the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) has asked the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for a hefty P78-million budget.
“From the days when we were, let’s say zero, now we’re at 20 (million pesos). I now want to go to 50,” Carrion said.
“That’s why I went to the PSC to defend my budget of P78 million and I hope that I can get it.”
Yulo won two gold medals in the Summer Games and his feat has elevated the level of play in gymnastics.
Carrion, meanwhile, said that with the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand this December excluding the team all-around, the GAP is aiming to use the tournament as a way to develop other members of the national team.
Carrion said should Yulo join the biennial meet, they will have to limit him to just one to two apparatuses.
“I don’t think, you know, it’s not good for Carlos to win all the medals so you’re going to spread it because there’s only six apparatus,” Carrion said.
GAP was recently honored as the National Sport Association of the Year in the Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night.
The federation won’t have trouble in this format set by the Thais in this year’s SEA Games.
In 2023, Yulo actually competed in the parallel bars and rings where he got a gold medal and a silver medal, respectively.
Also, John Ivan Cruz is the defending champion in the men’s floor exercise while Miguel Besana took the gold in the vault, two of Yulo’s pet apparatuses.
