One of the Philippines' largest saltwater crocodiles, Pangil, has died.
According to Davao Crocodile Park & Zoo, Pangil passed away on 25 January due to complications from metastatic squamous cell carcinoma.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pangil, our beloved flagship animal and one of the largest saltwater crocodiles in the Philippines,” the zoo’s management shared in a Facebook post.
Despite extensive medical care and surgical intervention, the cancer had already spread, ultimately causing multi-systemic organ failure, the zoo reported.
Based on his medical report, a mass developed on Pangil's left hindlimb in early 2022, reaching the size of a golf ball by mid-year before being diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma.
Although medication initially reduced its size, the mass later grew to the size of a tennis ball. On 11 August 2023, Pangil underwent surgery to amputate his digits and the surrounding tissue affected by the growth.
Later on, in 2024, his left hindlimb enlarged once again. "Although this time there was no clear single growth or lesion visible on the outside of the leg, this was a clear indication that cancer had come back and was starting to metastasize," the report stated.
The zoo further expressed their appreciation toward the beloved animal, "for decades, Pangil has been a symbol of strength, wonder, and the rich biodiversity of our country. He was not just an attraction at Davao Crocodile Park & Zoo; he was a treasured icon, inspiring countless visitors to appreciate the beauty and importance of wildlife."
According to Davao Crocodile Park & Zoo, he was approximately 85 to 90 years old.
