Alex Eala’s ranking in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) keeps rising despite failing to advance to the main draw of the women’s single event of the Australian Open.
In the latest ranking released by WTA on Tuesday, the 19-year old Filipina tennis sensation is now at No. 134 — two rungs higher than her erstwhile career standing of No. 136 last week.
Eala, a double gold medalist in the 18th Asian Games in China in 2023, continues to soar despite failing to see action in the main draw of the first Grand Slam event of the year.
Her latest event — the Singapore Tennis Open — was quite forgettable as she bowed to Simona Waltert of Switzerland in the qualifiers to bomb out of the main draw.
She also failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the ITF W100 Bengaluru in India after falling to lower-ranked Dalila Jakupovic of Slovenia in the Round of 16.
Still, Eala is enjoying a banner year, cementing her claim as the highest-ranked Filipina in the WTA ranking.
Australian Open runner-up Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus remains on top with 8956 points while Polish powerhouse Iga Swiatek is at No. 2 with 8770 points.
Coco Gauff of the United States, Jasmine Paolini of Italy, and Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan round out the top five.
