The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) has extended P8.9 million worth of aid to fisherfolk and farmers in Batanes who were severely affected by typhoons “Julian” and “Leon.”

According to DoLE, the livelihood assistance will benefit 11 associations composed of 295 informal workers whose livelihoods were disrupted by the typhoons that hit the country in October and November last year.

Based on the assessment of the Department of Agriculture, typhoon “Julian” affected more than 33,110 farmers and left over P600 million in agricultural damage.

Meanwhile, “Leon” also caused significant damage to infrastructure in Batanes, including power and communication lines, uprooted trees and destroyed homes.

The DoLE said the project aims to provide fisherfolk and farmers with essential tools, training, and resources to boost their productivity and income.

Formalized through a memorandum of agreement signed last year, the project involves the provision of motorized boats, fishing gear, tilapia aquaculture and fish processing projects.
