A representative of a partylist group has recently pledged to prioritize legislation addressing rising prices of basic goods once Congress resumes session.
Galing sa Puso (GP) Partylist first nominee Atty. JP Padiernos stressed that legislative action is crucial to control price hikes and improve supply chain management as there is the need to relieve pressure on consumers, especially low-income Filipinos.
"This issue needs immediate attention. Many Filipinos, especially those in lower-income brackets, are struggling with the rising costs of goods," Padiernos said in an interview. "This should not be happening in a country like ours, which is rich in agricultural resources."
While acknowledging global factors contribute to inflation, Padiernos said the government can mitigate effects through targeted legislation.
"We can control the impact of inflation through effective policy," said Padiernos. "We must ensure that supply chains run efficiently and that the movement of essential goods is not impeded by unnecessary barriers or inefficiencies."
Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed inflation surged to 2.9 percent in December, driven by higher costs in housing, utilities and fuel.
GP Partylist has filed bills aimed at fostering economic growth through sustainable solutions, including developing waste-to-energy technologies, establishing industrial ecozones, and creating hatcheries to boost local agriculture.
"We are committed to finding long-term solutions that will not only address immediate concerns but also contribute to the country's overall economic stability," Padiernos said.
As Congress prepares to reconvene, the GP Partylist's agenda promises swift action to address economic challenges faced by ordinary Filipinos.
