The Aboitiz Foundation, through its AuroraPH program, has provided solar power, internet connectivity, and digital tools to Pangan-an Elementary and High schools in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, as part of its mission to support remote schools across the country.
Launched on 22 January, the initiative is part of the Aboitiz Foundation’s goal to aid 300 off-grid schools and bridge educational gaps through renewable energy and technology. The program ensures that students and teachers in remote areas have access to quality education and digital resources.
Implemented in partnership with Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corporation, the program aligns with the Department of Education’s Last Mile Schools Program, aimed at addressing the needs of underserved schools. The project was supported by the local government of Lapu-Lapu City and other Aboitiz Group business units, including CitySavings Bank and AboitizPower’s A+ Power Services, Inc.
Solar panels, transported by boat to Pangan-an Island, were installed to provide sustainable power to the schools. Each school received two 5-kilowatt solar power systems, including 10 solar panels, a 5-kW inverter, and a 51.2V 100AH battery. These systems will help reduce electricity costs, enabling schools to reallocate savings toward educational improvements.
“This program is a source of hope for children in remote areas,” said Aboitiz Foundation president Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar. “With AuroraPH, we’re bringing solar power, internet, and technology to far-flung schools, bridging the digital gap and preparing students for the future. Since starting in 2024, over 2,000 students and teachers have benefited, and we aim to reach 300 schools nationwide.”
DepEd Lapu-Lapu City Division School Superintendent Dr. Marilyn Andales expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting its significant impact on enhancing educational resources.
Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corporation deputy chief operations officer Aldwin Uy highlighted the sustainability aspect, saying, “AuroraPH not only addresses the needs of remote schools but also invests in a sustainable future for education.”
The AuroraPH program reflects the Aboitiz Group’s commitment to empowering communities through renewable energy and technology while fostering equitable access to education nationwide.
