On the American TV game show, “Wheel of Fortune,” contestants solve puzzle phrases by guessing their letters one at a time. The contestant who deciphers the phrase taking letters from a spinning giant wheel wins cash and prizes.
The longest-running TV game show in the United States celebrated its 50th year on 9 January by gathering past and present contestants. There was a game pitting three of them, including Rhea Mathew who played in an October 2023 episode, New York Post (NYP) reports.
Mathew guessed right the four-word, 15-letter phrase with only the second letter “i,” 5th and 7th letters “y” and “u,” 11th letter “r,” and “m” in the last word showing on the puzzle board. A question mark helped Mathew guess the phrase, “Will you marry me?”
Mathew’s boyfriend, Robin, then appeared on stage and popped the question to her. The surprised girlfriend said, “yes.”
Robin set up the romantic ruse with help from show hosts Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White, according to NYP.
Meanwhile, a foreign influencer living in Melbourne, Australia asked his fiancee, also a foreigner residing in the same city, to join his prank marriage video in Sydney in December 2023 to raise the number of his Instagram followers and viewership.
Believing that the prank was harmless as a civil marriage would be valid only if it were held in a court, she obliged.
Two months after the supposedly mock marriage, the guy asked her to add him as a dependent in her application for permanent residency in Australia, BBC reports.
When she told him it was not possible as they were not married, he revealed that their Sydney wedding ceremony had been genuine, according to BBC.
The woman immediately went to a local court and filed for the annulment of their marriage.
“I’m furious with the fact that I didn’t know that that was a real marriage, and the fact that he also lied from the beginning, and the fact that he also wanted me to add him in my application,” she said, according to BBC.
On 9 January, a Melbourne judge granted the annulment after accepting the woman’s claim that she was tricked into getting married.
