There is no permanent job in public office. When Sao Paulo New Party’s Janaína Lima was not reelected to the council of Sao Paulo, Brazil last year, she vacated her office to be taken over by her successor, Adrilles Jorge of the Labor Party.

Upon leaving on 1 January, she took all her personal stuff, leaving improvements she made to the office, except for three fixtures.

A video taken by the council building’s security camera showed Lima’s staff carting away the toilet and two sinks and it went viral on social media.

At his inauguration, Jorge joked to G1 that his staff would be using “a communal potty” until the missing toilet was returned.

The ex-councilor defended her action, saying the council’s legal department advised her to remove all the assets she had installed. Lima said she paid for the office renovations with her own money so the toilet technically belonged to her and not the council, New York Post reports.

The heavy backlash on social media prompted Lima to return the toilet, saying in a post on X that she was donating it, according to .

Meanwhile, the owner of a shoe store in Fresno, California came up with a unique way to prevent the theft of merchandise when the shop is closed.

Roman Gonzales told KSEE that he adopted the system in November 2023 after nighttime burglars looted his DripOnDrip store at the River Park shopping center.

Clearing out the store’s display floor each night and leaving its wall display with only right-foot shoes seemed to have deterred thieves by letting them see that there was nothing to steal inside.

Unfortunately, on 30 December, burglars rammed the storefront with their car to get in and only then realized they could not take away anything of value. The thieves’ shock was caught by the security cameras.

Gonzales still felt frustrated by the damage to his storefront though.

“If they (thieves) would have looked through the window, they would have noticed that there was nothing on the floor for them to take,” Gonzales said, according to the reports.

He also ridiculed the robbers for taking two right-foot shoes.

“There’s no value once you take this shoe. I mean, you can’t just buy a left-foot shoe online either. So you’re not going to be able to use that item or even resell it. It’s just pointless,” Gonzales said, NYP reports.
