Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) spokesperson Edwil Zabala announced that the upcoming “Rally for Peace” on Monday is meant to show support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s opposition to the impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte.

According to Zabala, the rally aligns with the President’s opinion that he does not agree with the impeachment efforts targeting Duterte, and aims to express solidarity with this stance.

The rally comes amid political tensions, as at least three impeachment complaints have been filed against the Vice President in the House of Representatives, following legislative inquiries into her alleged misuse of confidential funds.

Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino also voiced his full support for the INC’s event, underscoring the importance of the rally as a call for unity and dialogue during the ongoing political disputes.

Tolentino praised the initiative, calling it a timely reminder of the need for cooperation and harmony among Filipinos, especially in light of the divisions in the government.

“This initiative is a timely and vital reminder of the need for unity, dialogue, and harmony amidst the challenges our nation faces,” Tolentino said. “The rally reflects the shared desire of Filipinos for understanding and cooperation, transcending divisions for the common good.”

5,000 cops to secure rally

Meanwhile, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has deployed over 5,000 police officers and security personnel to ensure the peace and security of the rally.

NCRPO chief BGen. Anthony Aberin confirmed that they have coordinated with INC leadership to maintain order during the event.

Of the 5,000 security personnel, 4,418 police officers will be stationed in various areas, while 1,300 augmentation forces will provide route security throughout the rally.

With an estimated one million participants expected to attend, the rally will be one of the largest gatherings in the country.

To manage traffic and ensure safety, certain roads in the vicinity of the rally venue will be closed starting at 4 a.m. on Monday. These include Katigbak Drive, South Drive, Independence Road, and several sections of Roxas Boulevard, among others. Motorists are advised to follow the rerouting plan and consider alternative routes to avoid delays.

In support of the event, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will allow one-lane street parking for participants near the rally site.

MMDA chairman Don Artes also warned that vehicles parked in violation of the regulations will be ticketed and towed.

Additionally, the MMDA will implement a no-day-off, no-absent policy for its 1,300 personnel to assist motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow.

Malacañang previously issued a suspension of work in government offices and classes at all school levels in Manila and Pasay on Monday, in preparation for the INC rally.

The “Rally for Peace” is expected to draw significant participation as the INC continues to be a major influence in the Philippines, having previously endorsed President Marcos and Vice President Duterte during the 2022 elections.
