On 13 January, members of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) will converge for the National Rally for Peace, with brethren from Metro Manila and nearby provinces gathering at the Quirino Grandstand, while similar gatherings will take place at other venues across the country.
Before the faithful fill the grandstand in a display of solidarity, one might find it compelling to revisit moments in history when the Church stood resolutely for its principles. Two films, both chronicling pivotal events in the INC’s history, provide a window into such moments.
In commemoration of the 100th birth anniversary of the late Executive Minister Brother Eraño G. Manalo, the films Ipakipaglaban ang Pananampalataya and Ang Paglikas were made available for free streaming on 11 January via the official CEBSI Films YouTube channel. The films were also screened that same day at the EVM Convention Center in Quezon City. Written and directed by Nestor Malgapo, the films chronicle real-life events that underscore the Iglesia ni Cristo’s unwavering commitment to its faith.
As part of the commemoration of the EGM Centennial, the goal of the films is to showcase Ka Erdy’s works and numerous accomplishments during his time and to introduce him to the new generation who did not have the chance to know him.
This film dramatizes the INC’s opposition to the Cuenco Bill in 1965. Officially known as the Religious Instruction Bill, the legislation sought to mandate Catholic religious instruction in public schools. Spearheaded by Congressman Miguel Cuenco, the bill faced staunch resistance from the Church, which questioned its constitutionality and viewed it as a potential threat to religious freedom.
Set in Hacienda Luisita, Tarlac, Ang Paglikas depicts the persecution endured by INC members working in the estate. Subjected to harsh discrimination — ranging from being denied basic necessities to outright violence — the members themselves ultimately made the decision to leave the estate in what became an exodus, a testament to their resilience and faith in the face of adversity.
In an email interview, writer-director Nestor Malgapo shared insights into the films’ lasting impact.
“These two films focus on how we defend our faith as members of the Church of Christ. When our faith is threatened, the people of God stand firm for truth and justice. These docufilms not only recount key moments in our history, but also stir our emotions to fight for our faith. Our goal is to help the new generation understand the sacrifices made by earlier servants of God, especially in a world that seems to be growing more troubled.”
On the timeliness of the films, Malgapo emphasized their relevance:
“In times of discord and persecution, particularly in a world lacking peace, these films highlight the need to unite in defense of our faith. They reignite the passion of our brethren to remain steadfast and resolute in our divine election.”
Asked why the films are worth watching, Malgapo noted that the courage and unwavering faith of the Church’s past members have left an indelible mark on its history, teaching future generations to stay strong and unwavering in their faith.
Reflecting on the films’ original release and his role as writer and director, Malgapo shared:
“Released in 1985, these films marked an important milestone in the leadership of Brother Eraño G. Manalo as Executive Minister. I am grateful for the opportunity given by the Church Administration to write and direct these films, allowing me to express my commitment and dedication in a way that aligns with the Church’s vision, under the guidance of our beloved Executive Minister, Brother Eduardo V. Manalo, and his steadfast helper, Brother Angelo Eraño V. Manalo.”
Ipakipaglaban ang Pananampalataya and Ang Paglikas are still available to stream for free on the CEBSI Films YouTube channel.
