He was 33 years old.
According to a police report, Guarte was stabbed at around 4:30 p.m. with the suspect still on the run.
Guarte clinched two silver medals in the men's 800m and 1500m events in the 2011 SEA Games in Jakarta.
Shifting to obstacle course, Guarte won the 2019 SEA Games gold in the men's five kilometer race before clinching another mint in the team relay of the 2023 edition of the biennial meet in Cambodia.
The Philippine Obstacle Sports Federation sent its condolences to Guarte.
Thank you for your service, Mervin! You will be greatly missed," the federation posted.
