Philippine Squash Academy (PSA) president Robert Bachmann is grateful head coach Wee Wern Low of Malaysia has opted to stay in the Philippines and help out the national team.
Bachmann told DAILY TRIBUNE the former world No. 5 squash player has been the head coach for Kayod Pilipinas since March.
“There are many teams that want her and every time we go to a tournament, I’m there with her,” Bachmann said.
“She’s very transparent. So she tells me what countries are offering her and stuff like that but she knows them on our, you know our limitations with the PSC (Philippine Sports Commission).”
“We’re very fortunate to have her.”
With Low on board, Kayod Pilipinas is expected to compete in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games next year in Thailand.
Kayod Pilipinas’ 4-3-5 gold-silver-bronze medal tally in the Southeast Asia Cup last June at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex was a testament of the impact of Low’s hiring.
At the MARIGOLD 2024 SGSquash PSA Satellite 4 SF last November in Singapore, Jemyca Aribado defeated home bet Au Yeong Wai Yhann, 3-1, for the gold medal in the women’s division while David Pelino earned a bronze medal in the men’s division after making it as far as the semifinals.
Bachmann said they are looking to extend Low’s contract for 2025.
“Will discuss in our budget hearing next year. Request for extension had already been submitted,” Bachmann said.
“For me, she’s God-sent, and she’s done wonders for the team.”
