Approximately P6.8 million worth of suspected methamphetamine, commonly known as shabu, was intercepted by the Philippine Coast Guard K-9 Unit at Matnog Port in Sorsogon on Monday, authorities reported Tuesday.
Based on the report, a K-9 dog detected the contraband, approximately one kilogram, during a routine inspection.
The PCG immediately coordinated with the Philippine National Police, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Philippine Ports Authority to identify and pursue the suspects.
The seizure is part of the intensified Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Pasko 2024 of the Department of Transportation.
As of Monday, the PCG monitored 84,418 outbound passengers and 86,667 inbound passengers across all ports nationwide.
Moreover, 2,946 frontline personnel deployed across 16 PCG districts have inspected 706 vessels and 975 motorbancas.
The PCG has placed its districts, stations, and sub-stations on heightened alert from 20 December 2024 to 3 January 2025 to manage the influx of port passengers.
