The timing of the Register this year could not be more apt with the recent adoption of the Riyadh Design Law Treaty

This month, I joined the last ASEAN working Group on IP Cooperation (AWGIPC) and 6th ASEAN IP Registry Coordinators Meeting as IPOPHL director general.
Much of the agenda of the meeting revolved around the way forward in putting in force the ASEAN Intellectual Property (IP) Register to ensure its maximum benefits to the region. I am glad to share that the AWGIPC has been making significant headway in standardizing the guidelines for its effective use across member states.
The ASEAN IP Register is a one-stop shop IP information portal that will incorporate up-to-date IP data from all 10 ASEAN member states maintained by the World Intellectual Property Organization. It will provide access to complete sets of ASEAN IP data for all stakeholders to conduct patent, trademark and design searches seamlessly.
The establishment of the ASEAN IP Register is a pivotal step toward realizing ASEAN’s ambition to foster deeper economic integration. The ambition hinges on building robust, collaborative frameworks, and IP plays a major role in this effort.
What the ASEAN IP Register does is more than merely compile trademarks, patents and designs in a single database. It creates an environment of transparency and accessibility, offering a compass for navigating the often complex IP landscape.
For entrepreneurs, innovators and policymakers, such clarity is indispensable as it provides them the opportunity for informed decision-making and a streamlined pathway to protecting and commercializing their designs in an increasingly interconnected world.
For the entire region, the Register translates to strengthened regional collaboration and enhanced value chain for IP assets.
The database portal emerges at a crucial time for ASEAN’s growth. WIPO’s 2023 Global Innovation Index reported that the market value of ASEAN’s leading brands has surpassed US$250 billion. This figure is not just a testament to ASEAN’s burgeoning intangible assets but also a clarion call to harness this growing untapped potential. By enabling businesses and creators to leverage IP data effectively, the Register could transform IP from a static asset into a dynamic driver of economic opportunities.
Moreover, the IP Register aligns with the ASEAN IP Rights Action Plan 2016-2025. This strategic framework aims to transform ASEAN into a hub of innovation and competitiveness, reinforcing the goals of the ASEAN Economic Community.
The Register ultimately embodies ASEAN’s commitment to a thriving regional IP ecosystem — one that encourages IP commercialization, fosters cross-border collaboration, and fortifies IP infrastructure across member states. It is also a testament to the united motto of the ASEAN — that no one should be left behind — and that every member state should see their innovation environment stimulated and their economy moving toward prosperity.
The timing of the Register this year could not be more apt with the recent adoption of the Riyadh Design Law Treaty. The historic adoption marks the entry of the global landscape for design protection into a new era of standardization and efficiency. The IP Register complements this by offering a consolidated repository of IP data that supports strategic decision-making and investment planning for businesses.
The establishment of the ASEAN IP Register is a pivotal step toward realizing ASEAN’s ambition to foster deeper economic integration.
Ultimately, the purpose of the ASEAN IP Register moves beyond serving as a technological tool to becoming a pathway in leading ASEAN to greater innovation and growth. By fostering an environment where IP assets can be seamlessly transformed into market opportunities, ASEAN is laying the groundwork for a future where economic integration and creativity thrive hand in hand.
Stakeholders are invited to access this portal, explore the trends and make data-backed decisions that can shape the region’s narrative of success and progress.
