Public cautioned vs. holiday heart syndrome

The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday cautioned the public about holiday heart syndrome, a condition characterized by alcohol-induced arrhythmias.

During a hospital round on Saturday in preparation for the holiday season, the Philippine Heart Center (PHC) reported 60 cases of stroke from July to November.

Of these, seven cases were recorded between 1 and 20 December.

The DOH warned that stroke cases may continue to rise after Christmas and before the New Year if excessive alcohol consumption and overeating are not avoided.The PHC has already seen this increase in 2023.

According to the PHC, in December 2023 the number of stroke cases in the hospital reached 38 which increased to 42 by January 2024.

The PHC previously observed a similar trend in 2023, when 38 stroke cases recorded in December increased to 42 by January 2024—the highest monthly total that year. Meanwhile, acute coronary syndrome cases at the PHC rose from 110 in December 2023 to 115 in January 2024.

The East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) also reported a steady increase in stroke cases during the holiday season over the past few years.

  • 188 cases in December 2020

  • 226 cases in December 2021

  • 247 cases in December 2022

  • 328 cases in December 2023

Similar patterns were noted at St. Luke’s Medical Center (SLMC) in Quezon City, which recorded:

  • 415 stroke cases in 2023, compared to 295 cases in 2022

  • 339 stroke discharges from January to November 2024

DOH Secretary Ted Herbosa urged Filipino families to prioritize their health by maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, and practicing self-discipline during the holiday season.

“The DOH loves our countrymen. Just as you take care of your relatives, we remind you to avoid overeating salty, fatty, and sweet foods this holiday season,” Herbosa said in Filipino. 

“Eat more vegetables and fruits that should be half of your Pinggang Pinoy. Let's find time to exercise,” he added.
