Elreen Ando finished sixth but still broke a pair of national records in the women’s 64-kilogram event of the IWF World Championships last Wednesday in Manama, Bahrain.
The 26-year-old Ando lifted 129 kgs in clean and jerk to shatter her previous record of 126 kgs that she posted in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China last year.
Her total lift of 229 kgs also emerged as a national record as she eclipsed her previous mark of 223 kgs that she tallied in the 31st Southeast Asian Games last year.
The two-time Olympian, however, tallied only 100 kgs in snatch, dooming her chances of landing on the medal podium.
Powerhouse North Korea took the top two spots with Ri Suk clinching the gold medal with a total lift of 264 kgs while Rim Un Sim settled for the silver medal with a total lift of 256 kgs. Li Shuang of China secured the bronze medal after a total lift of 241 kgs.
Despite Ando’s failure to outshine the mighty North Koreans, it’s still a mission accomplished for the Filipinos as they already have three bronze medals in this prestigious event that was participated by the best lifters in the world.
Fernando Agad Jr. took a bronze medal after making a total lift of 263 kgs in the men’s 55-kg category while Rosegie Ramos pocketed two bronze medals after posting 88 kgs in snatch and 193 kgs in total lift in the women’s 49-kg category.
Meanwhile, Dave Pacaldo was tagged with a DNF (did not finish) in the men’s 67-kg event.
